Many of our proudest accomplishments come from helping teams self-correct when the team problems get metastatic. A recent client (name withheld for privacy), a capable leader in a Fortune 1000 organization, inherited a team of nine managers that he described as “a symphony of chaos.” Trust, morale, and productivity were at rock bottom.
Our engagement began with interviewing each team member. Before meeting in person, we facilitated short virtual workshops for participants to re-engage with each other as authentic humans, not disgruntled co-workers. Subsequently, we held a two-day workshop to prioritize team issues, and hold authentic but difficult conversations. Most team and interpersonal challenges were openly addressed. A few were resolved, others were “de-fanged.” Five post-workshop virtual sessions helped the group find solutions to their thornier problems. One participant subsequently departed, but the remainder of the team worked cohesively through the following year.
